Six Powerful Tips for Career Advancement

October 2, 2018 © Copyright Glomacs

If you’re interested in finding out how to improve your professional development and get promoted quickly, I encourage you to continue reading this article. Here are my top six professional development tips.

1. Never stop learning new skills.

A proven way to advance your career quickly is to become a “lifelong student” and never stop learning. School is never out for the person who is looking for opportunities to acquire new skills. Stay on top of changing trends in your chosen career field.

2. Find a mentor.

A mentor will give you both professional development advice and encouragement you need to focus your strengths and shore up your weaknesses. The perfect mentor is someone who works well with you and has the experience to guide you along the path of success.

3. Develop your communication and presentation skills.

The truth is that you don’t get promoted on what you know; you get promoted on how you communicate what you know. The ability to communicate effectively is essential, no matter what industry you work in. Consider joining a Toastmasters speaking group. Do you want to become a confident public speaker and strong leader? If so, Toastmasters is the place for you. You’ll find a supportive learn-by-doing environment that allows you to achieve your goals at your own pace.

4. Seek feedback for continuous improvement.

Receiving honest, constructive feedback from peers, managers, friends and family members is critically important for professional development. If you regularly solicit feedback, others will help you to discover areas for improvement that you might have otherwise overlooked.

5. Take personal responsibility for your actions.

The willingness to take personal responsibility for your actions is the golden key that unlocks your potential greatness. A responsible person makes mistakes, but when they do, they take responsibility and make it right. Until you accept responsibility for your actions, it’ll be impossible for you to move ahead in your career.

6. Set written goals for career advancement and personal development.

Absolutely nothing of significance has every been achieved without first developing a written plan. Yogi Berra once said,

“If you are not sure where you are going, you might end up someplace else.”

It’s been my experience that people who don’t have written goals for personal and professional development, typically end up working for people who do have written goals. Creating a written Personal Development Plan will give you the structure, confidence, and self-motivation you need to accomplish your goals. Planning your goals gives you the opportunity to think about the direction you want your career to take and work out what skills you need to learn to get there.

The six suggestions that I listed above will go a long way to position you for a promotion, but you must begin right now to assimilate them into your daily routine.
