Modern Power System Protective Relaying

Code Date Venue Fees
EL006 17 - 21 Dec 2017 Dubai - UAE $4,500 Register

Introduction

This Modern Power System Protective Relaying seminar has been designed to provide a clear and perfect understanding of power system protection schemes and devices including protection relays, fuses, circuit breakers, and other protective devices. In modern power systems, nowadays, protection systems play a significant role in efficiently running plant operations, utility switching, industry load transfer, maintenance programs, and investment policies. The outcome is to minimize system outages and to keep the maintenance and repair costs at reasonable prices. With the advancement of technology, now there is need for many system operators, electrical engineers (at all levels of proficiency), asset engineers, and project engineers to learn more about the power system protection concepts, logic, and applications to acceptable levels.

These days, advanced protection devices are considered as Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED’s) in all modern smart grids where protection schemes, logic, and relay settings rely heavily on a good understanding of communication protocols, inter-tripping schemes, etc. This seminar will provide sufficient theoretical background in a simple language together with a step-by-step procedure to analyze electric faults, their consequences, and recommended solutions through industry-based practical worked examples and mini projects to achieve an optimized and coordinated operation of protective devices in typical moderately complex power systems.

This seminar will highlight:

  • Electric fault types and fault calculations
  • Load studies
  • Protection relay types and functions
  • Protection logic and settings
  • Coordination of protection devices

Objectives

At the end of this seminar, you will learn how to:

  • Select fit-for-the-purpose protection relays and other related devices
  • Calculate fault levels and loadings of feeders and branches
  • Develop and analyze typical power systems and their associated protection systems
  • Analyze protection logics and coordination between protection devices
  • Establish communication between protection devices and controllers

Training Methodology

The seminar will be presented by means of Power Point slides through which all the required theory and equations will be provided. The seminar also includes case studies where the participants are required to take part in class activities including system analysis, calculations, relay settings, etc. The instructor will also use training videos for better understanding of the participants. The participants will be progressively assessed during the seminar via quizzes, questions, assignments, and worked examples.

Organisational Impact

Organizations in power industry, oil & gas, mining, utilities, etc. will substantially benefit from this seminar. In fact, they will obtain more brilliant ideas in terms of:

  • Asset management; including asset replacement programs
  • Value assurance; including estimation and risk assessment of power projects
  • Maintenance; including root cause analysis of faults and applying preventative methods
  • Engineering management; including selection of right devices and protection gears
  • Project management; including optimization of power system configurations
  • Operation; including analyzing different switching regimes in rating/sizing power system equipment

Personal Impact

Participants from different sectors of engineering companies will enormously benefit from this seminar because they will become quite familiar with:

  • Power system analysis including load and fault studies
  • Role of protective relaying
  • Theoretical concepts and practical equations of power system protection
  • Analysis and design of protection logic and schemes
  • Relay functions and their applications and coordination
  • Complexity of power system switching & operation together with proposed solutions for protection
